Opening NC Files

The NC file type is primarily associated with NetCDF.

What is an NC file?

NC files mostly belong to NetCDF by Unidata. An NC file is a CNC program generated with a computer-aided manufacturing software like Bocad. It contains a standard description for steel structure construction pieces for numerical controls. Such descriptions are written in Deutscher Stahlbau-Verband's (DSTV) CNC language. CAM programs such as Mastercam, Geopath, EDIT, and FlatCAM store the contents of an NC program using a vendor independent/specific flavor of G-code (RS-274) CNC language. NC is also the filename extension of a machine part model created with Geopath. Another type of NC file is a scientific dataset created using NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) data analysis library.

How to open an NC file

You need a suitable software like NetCDF to open an NC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert NC files:

  1. NetCDF by Unidata
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. NC files are often referred to as NetCDF data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Bocad (steel fabrication CNC program) by AVEVA
Bocad is a 3D computer-aided structural design and manufacturing software suite. It uses an NC file to store computer numerical control commands for steel fabrication. This file format is classified as CAD.
  3. EDIT (CNC program) by CIMCO
EDIT is full-featured CNC editing software. It can import, edit, and export an NC file containing a CNC program (G-code) stored in the format used by Fanuc machine tools. This file format is classified as CAD.
  4. FlatCAM (CNC program) by Juan Pablo Caram
FlatCAM is a free G-code and Gerber file visualization and editing program. It can edit and fabricate a 3D product using a computer numerical control program saved in an NC file. This file format is classified as CAD. Related links: G-code
  5. Geopath (machine part) by SolutionWare
Geopath is a modular software suite featuring computer-aided design and manufacturing tools for mills, lathes, and electronics design automation. A machine part model designed with Geopath is saved in an NC file. This file format is classified as CAD.
  6. GEOS (source code) by GeoWorks
GEOS (short for Graphic Environment Operating System) is a discontinued 8bit operating system compatible with Commodore 64 and Apple II computers. It uses an NC file to store preprocessed GOC source code. This file format is classified as Developer.
  7. Mastercam (computer numerical control program) by CNC Software
Matercam is a computer-aided design and manufacturing software suite. It uses an NC file to store and export a computer numerical control program saved in G-code format. This file format is classified as CAD. Related links: G-code
  8. Matlab (scientific data) by MathWorks
Matlab is a data computation/visualization environment and programming language. It can create, import/export, and process an NC file containing scientific data saved in NetCDF format. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: NetCDF Users Manual, NetCDF
  9. mcrypt (encrypted archive) by mcrypt Developers
mcrypt is a command line, file encryption program for Unix-like operating systems. It uses an NC file to store encrypted data. This file format is classified as Encoded.
  10. neatComponents (data) by neatComponents Developer
neatComponents is a Windows-based content management system used for website development and hosting. It uses some data saved in an NC file. This file format is classified as Data.
  11. X-editor (CNC program) by X-net ApS
X-editor is a discontinued CNC editing program for Windows. It saves a CNC program in an NC file. This file format is classified as CAD.

NC file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the NC files looks like this:

The NC file extension is very common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All other NC files (30%) have no uniform format, the following 20 formats can be found: XML, PGM and CAM. They are often associated with historical, annual, avhrr, offl, rainfall or wind. You can get all the details of your NC file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .nc file to analyze" above.

an nc scientific data is a special file format by Unidata and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with NC files

  • Associate the NC file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open scientific data files. Because only the current version supports the latest NC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Unidata manufacturer website after an available NetCDF update.
  • To make sure that your NC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .NC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
