What is an NC file?

NC files mostly belong to NetCDF by Unidata. An NC file is a CNC program generated with a computer-aided manufacturing software like Bocad. It contains a standard description for steel structure construction pieces for numerical controls. Such descriptions are written in Deutscher Stahlbau-Verband's (DSTV) CNC language. CAM programs such as Mastercam, Geopath, EDIT, and FlatCAM store the contents of an NC program using a vendor independent/specific flavor of G-code (RS-274) CNC language. NC is also the filename extension of a machine part model created with Geopath. Another type of NC file is a scientific dataset created using NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) data analysis library.

How to open an NC file

You need a suitable software like NetCDF to open an NC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your NC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a NC file directly in the browser:. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The NC file extension is very common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

45% of all NC files are based on the well-known HDF5 file format. HDF5 is short for Hierarchical Data Format version 5. It is an open source file format for storing and organizing large amounts of data. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. NC files are between 110 KB and 220 MB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The following keywords are characteristic: OHDR. Such files are related to mean, monthly, daily, hadukgrid, climatology, precip, land and oper.
25% of all NC files belong to NetCDF Network Common Data Form. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 34 KB to 240 MB in size. The keywords time, Conventions and title are typical for these files. Files like these are about adaptor, mars, internal, data, newa, global and clim.

All other NC files (30%) have no uniform format, the following 20 formats can be found: XML, PGM and CAM. They are often associated with historical, annual, avhrr, offl, rainfall or wind. How to solve problems with NC files

Associate the NC file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open scientific data files. Because only the current version supports the latest NC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Unidata manufacturer website after an available NetCDF update.
To make sure that your NC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
