What is a PFM file

PFM files mostly belong to Creative Cloud by Adobe. A PFM file contains metrics of a PostScript Type 1 font. It is the binary version of an AFM (Adobe Font Metric) which contains global font properties and information about each character in a given font program. While PFM and AFM files are supported by Windows and macOS environments, Linux-based systems only support AFM font metrics. Another type of PFM file is a grayscale or colored image saved in Portable Float Map format. XnView can open such images. PFM is also the filename extension of a drawing created with Mold Design computer-aided design and manufacturing software.

How to open a PFM file

You need a suitable software like Creative Cloud to open a PFM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PFM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PFM file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The PFM file extension is used very often and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in PFM files:

• 45% of all PFM files are associated with Portable Float Map grayscale bitmap. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. PFM files can be up to 100 MB in size, but are often around 140 KB - 22 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: -1.000000. The file name disp0.pfm is typical for these files. These files are attributed to depth, lowres, highres, frame, stream and image.
• 25% of all PFM files are associated with Adobe Printer Font Metrics. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 680 bytes and 5 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Copyright. Files like these have the following tags: bold, wacn and medium.
