SAM files mostly belong to IBM Ami Pro. SAM files can represent different formats depending on their origin.

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. 40% of all SAM files start with the magic bytes regf, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 40 KB to 260 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SAM, OfRg, rmtm and regf.
40% of all SAM files are associated with Ami Pro/Word Pro document. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. SAM files are between 5 KB and 110 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. [sty], [ver], [charset], ANSI (Windows, IBM CP 1252), [files], [prn], [revisions], [lang], [port], LPT1, [desc], [fldnames] and LaserJet. Files like these are sometimes connected to chap, xmas, amipro and typk.

The remaining 20% of all SAM files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. Sequence Alignment/Map format, Ami Pro/Word Pro encrypted document, config, EXE and WordPro.
