What is an SKM file?

SKM files mostly belong to SketchUp by Trimble. SKM is the filename extension of documents containing drawings created with SketchUp 2D/3D modelling software. The SKM drawing file is compressed in ZIP format and it contains a PNG thumbnail, a JPG texture image as well as XML texture property files. SKM is also the filename extension of video files recorded using SK Telcom 3G mobile phones. SKM videos are stored in a modified version of 3GP format. Multimedia players such as Media Player, QuickTime, VLC, and GOM can be used to play videos stored in SKM files. Audio mix files created by Koan music generation engine are also stored in SKM files which can be opened with Noatikl and WOTJA music composition software.

How to open SKM files

You need a suitable software like SketchUp to open an SKM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SKM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SKM file directly in the browser:. SKM file extension format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The SKM extension is very commonly used. This SKM file itself is among the most popular common file types and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

• 85% of all SKM files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one SKM file. Such a ZIP file contains 4 to 5 files with names like doc_thumbnail.png, document.xml, documentProperties.xml and references.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. Most of these files are 1 KB to 590 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. document.xml. Such files are related to stone, wood, resene, concrete, texture, chromatic, paints and asian.
• 6% of all SKM files are based on the popular MP4 file format. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 240 KB to 21 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: ftypskm, mdat and skm2k3g13gp5. Some examples of file names are 20180601-0001.skm or 20180601-0002.skm.
