Opening SKM Files
The SKM file type is primarily associated with SketchUp.
What is an SKM file?
How to open SKM files
You need a suitable software like SketchUp to open an SKM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SKM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SKM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SKM files:
- SketchUp by Trimble
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SKM files are often referred to as SketchUp raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- STarKos (tune) by ArkosSTarKos is a music tracker software for the 8-bit Amstrad CPC (Color Personal Computer). It stored tunes in SKM files. This file format is classified as Audio.
- WOTJA (mix) by IntermorphicWOTJA (formerly Noatikl and Koan before that) is a music generation software with powerful tools for producing, mixing, and playing generative music. Audio mixes created with Koan and saved in SKM format can be played with WOTJA. This file format is classified as Audio. Related links: SSEYO Koan
SKM file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the SKM files looks like this:
The SKM extension is very commonly used. This SKM file itself is among the most popular common file types and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all SKM files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one SKM file. Such a ZIP file contains 4 to 5 files with names like doc_thumbnail.png, document.xml, documentProperties.xml and references.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. Most of these files are 1 KB to 590 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. document.xml. Such files are related to stone, wood, resene, concrete, texture, chromatic, paints and asian.
- 6% of all SKM files are based on the popular MP4 file format. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 240 KB to 21 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: ftypskm, mdat and skm2k3g13gp5. Some examples of file names are 20180601-0001.skm or 20180601-0002.skm.
All the rest of the SKM files (9%) have different formats, such as MP3 and DMSKM. These files sometimes refer to warehouse, sketchup, color, type, wall or archi. You can get all the details of your SKM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .skm file to analyze" above.

an skm materials and texture is a special file format by Trimble and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SKM files
- Associate the SKM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open materials and textures. Because only the current version supports the latest SKM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Trimble manufacturer website after an available SketchUp update.
- To make sure that your SKM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SKM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
