Opening STY Files
The STY file type is primarily associated with Yamaha Expansion Manager.
What is an STY file?
Purpose and Functionality:
These files hold binary data that defines performance styles—containing information such as chord progressions, rhythm patterns, tempo, and instrument layering. They enable keyboards to automatically generate accompaniment and rhythmic backing when you play.
Usage Cases:
- Yamaha Style – Used in keyboards like the PSR-S910. Manage these files with the Yamaha Expansion Manager.
- Korg Style – Employed in PA Series arranger keyboards. Visit the Korg official site for details.
Accessing and Editing:
Since STY files are binary, they are not viewable in ordinary text editors. Use manufacturer-specific software to open, manage, and back up these files.
Note:
FilExt.com note: A change in these style settings without proper tools can cause misinterpretation by your keyboard. It is a good practice to back up any STY file before attempting modifications.

STY file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the STY files is as follows:
STY is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in STY files:
- 80% of all STY files are Yamaha General Style files, which are based on the MIDI file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 20 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MThd, SInt, MTrk, SFF1 and SFF2. These files are often associated with sladak, beat, tabla, ballad, worship, slow, rock, praise, dance and seben.
- 10% of all STY files use the same file format, which have the signature 01 00 01 14 00. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. STY files are between 69 KB and 660 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as KORF. Some examples of file names are User01.sty or FAVORITE01.STY. These files are often associated with bank.
All other STY files (10%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Microsoft DirectMusic Style, ZIP, StoryInfo, PAD and ProvidesPackage. The category is cardas, disco, culy, hora, disko, bolero or sharp. You can get all the details of your STY file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sty file to play" above.
