What is an ADF file?

ADF files mostly belong to Amiga Forever by Cloanto. An ADF file is a database used by Act! customer relationship management software. It usually contains customer contact data, appointments, and other information organized into table fields. Another type of ADF file contains raster grids used by ArcGIS geospatial data analysis and visualization program. ADF is also a disk image format used by Amiga computers. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City uses radio stations saved in an ADF file. ARIS Express uses an ADF file to store a process model document. A web page created with Actual Drawing is saved in an ADF file.

How to open an ADF file

You need a suitable software like Amiga Forever to open an ADF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). The ADF extension is quite commonly used. The file itself has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in ADF files are:

15% of all ADF files start with the bytes DOS, which are crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 900 KB in size and range from 640 KB to 900 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as dos.library. These files can be linked to disk, across, arts and down, and usually contain person-related data.
15% of all ADF files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 27 0A FF FF. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 27 KB to 310 MB. A common filename is w20180601.adf or w20180601x.adf.

All other ADF files (70%) have no consistent format, such as ARIS Document File, Antenna Data File, Auto-lead Data Format, PS/2 MicroChannel Adapter Description File, BZ2, FGF, GRID and aSalockV.
