How to open an ADM file
You need a suitable software like Local Group Policy Editor to open an ADM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ADM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ADM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ADM format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the ADM files is as follows:
The ADM file extension includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all ADM files start with the bytes 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 180 KB to 1 MB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DSKIMG, GARMIN and USERDATA. A common filename is UserData.ADM. These files are often associated with waypoints.
- 20% of all ADM files use the ZIP algorithm, multiple files are compressed and combined into one ADM file. Such a ZIP file contains 3 to 3 files with names like adm-catalog-files-1.gz, atlasmapping-UI.1.json and \lib\. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. A typical file size is 2 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. atlasmapping-UI.0.json. The file name atlasmap-mapping.adm is characteristic of these files.
All other ADM files (40%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Windows Policy Administrative Template and Addict compiled dictionary. Sometimes used for dayzserver. If you want to find out which format your ADM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .adm file to analyze".

How to solve problems with ADM files
- Associate the ADM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open policy templates. Because only the current version supports the latest ADM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Local Group Policy Editor update.
- To make sure that your ADM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
