Opening an ARCH File
The ARCH file type is primarily associated with PeaZip.
What is an ARCH file
- Compressed Archives: Many ARCH files store collections of files using methods found in utilities like PeaZip, 7-Zip, and FreeArc. Some variants even indicate a specific internal format such as LinuxAr? or ZIP.
- System Logs and Configurations: In other cases the file acts as a log or configuration record. For example, Genesys configuration files are part of call handling systems, while Apple uses a plist based archive for Safari and related macOS utilities.
- Research Data: Certain ARCH files contain behavioral research data (such as files created by Noldus Observer XT) used in scientific studies.
Different applications assign the ARCH extension based on their internal file-handling needs. Check the file header or metadata to note any clues—this step can reveal if it is from a Linux environment (see Arch Linux), a Genesys system (Genesys), Apple's ecosystem (Safari), or even a research tool like Noldus (Noldus).
FilExt.com note: Understanding which tool created the file is key to selecting the correct viewer or extractor. Each variant has its own internal structure, so using a matching utility will allow proper access to the data contained within the file.
How to open an ARCH file
You need a suitable software like PeaZip to open an ARCH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ARCH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ARCH file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ARCH files:
- PeaZip
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ARCH files are often referred to as PeaZip compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

ARCH file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ARCH files comes to the following conclusion:
ARCH is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 15% of all ARCH files have the same signature 04 07 00 04 4C 48 45 41. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 21 KB. The file type is very recent. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. LDAT and LHEA.
- 15% of all ARCH files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "78 78 00 00" at the beginning. These files contain text and words as well as binary data. The files are 160 bytes to 8 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB.
All other ARCH files (70%) have no consistent format, often e.g. plist, ZIP, VerDate and nmW. Files like these are sometimes linked to wwmd, maxrefdes, csacex, export or apps. You can get all the details of your ARCH file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .arch file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for ARCH File Extension
an arch compressed archive file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ARCH files
- Associate the ARCH file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest ARCH file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PeaZip update.
- To make sure that your ARCH file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ARCH file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
