All about BBL Files
The BBL file type is primarily associated with BibTeX.
What is a BBL file
How do you open BBL files?
You need a suitable software like BibTeX to open a BBL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BBL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BBL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BBL files:
- BibTeX by Oren Patashnik
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BBL files are often referred to as BibTeX data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Blackbox Tools (flight log) by CleanflightBlackbox Tools is a toolkit for viewing and analyzing flight logs. BBL is one of its supported flight log formats. This file format is classified as Data.
- e-Sword (module) by Rick Meyerse-Sword is a bible study application for Windows operating system. Each module in this program is saved in a BBL file. This file format is classified as Data.
BBL file format:
To view or edit BBL files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BBL files looks like this:
The BBL extension is very commonly used. This BBL file itself is among the most popular common file types and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all BBL files are BibTeX Generated Bibliography files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. BBL files can be up to 73 KB in size, but are often around 540 bytes - 18 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: bibitem, \begin{thebibliography}{10} and newblock. Some examples of file names are output.bbl or Main.bbl. Such files sometimes refer to template, paper, thesis, manuscript, references, sample, elsarticle, document and elsevier.
- 15% of all BBL files start with the magic bytes H Product:Blackbox flight data recorder by Nicholas, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 8 MB in size and range from 610 KB to 16 MB. The keywords H Data version:2, H Product:Blackbox flight data recorder by Nicholas Sherlock and H Field I name:loopIteration,time,axisP[0],axisP[1],axisP[2],axisI[0],axisI[1],axisI[2],axisD[0],axisD[1],axisF[0],axisF[1 are typical for these files. A common filename is BTFL_BLACKBOX_LOG_20180601.BBL or btfl_all.bbl. Such files are related to btfl, blackbox, clfl, emuf, diatone and nazgul.
All the rest of the BBL files (35%) have different formats, such as JetDB, BibTeX, Generated, apsrev, merlin, providecommand, newcommand, misc and def. Files like these are sometimes linked to article, submission, zbwj, revised, format, report or arxiv. Just click the "Choose your .bbl file to view" button on this page to find out what your BBL file is.

How to solve problems with BBL files
- Associate the BBL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open bibliographys. Because only the current version supports the latest BBL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oren Patashnik manufacturer website after an available BibTeX update.
- To make sure that your BBL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BBL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
