What is a CAF file?

CAF files mostly belong to GarageBand by Apple. CAF filename extension is associated with audio file containers saved in the Core Audio Format developed by Apple. As an audio container, a single CAF file may contain audio content saved in various formats without imposing standard file size restrictions applicable to those formats. For example, the maximum size allowed for standalone WAV files is 4GB. However, when saved as part of a CAF container, that WAV file can exceed that size limitation without issue. Text annotations, channel layouts, and markers can also be saved alongside audio content in a CAF file. QuickTime, GarageBand and third-party programs support CAF audio format. CAF is also the filename extension of character animation data files used by CryENGINE game development kit. Animation information saved in CAF files are often compiled from CHR (character files) and used to build a game's database animation (DBA) file.

How to open CAF files

You need a suitable software like GarageBand to open a CAF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CAF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CAF file directly in the browser:.
