Opening a CPY File

The CPY file type is primarily associated with 3DS Max.

What is a CPY file?

CPY files mostly belong to 3DS Max by Autodesk. A file with CPY file extension is usually a copy file copied with the Copy/Paste rollout on the Motion panel of 3DS Max's, a versatile 3D animation software. Contents of such CPY files consist of copied tracks, postures, and poses which are reusable. eCopy, a document scanning software saves page layout configuration, text, and images for storing scanned or merged documents in CPY files using a Naunce proprietary format similar to PDF. COBOL, one of the earliest programming languages stores programs used CPY extension to store "include data". Ramdrive, a program used on classic Atari 8-bit computers stored commands in files with CPY extension.

How to open a CPY file

You need a suitable software like 3DS Max to open a CPY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CPY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CPY file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CPY files:

  1. 3DS Max by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CPY files are often referred to as 3DS Max 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. COBOL (properties definition) by Flexus
COBOL is a series of Active X add-on libraries for the COBOL programming language used by classic computers. Function, elements and values pairs, as well as properties associated with a control defined in COBOL were stored in CPY files. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: COBOL
  3. Copy Books
This file format is classified as Data.
  4. eCopy (scanned document) by Nuance
eCopy is a document scanning/merging PC software. Documents scanned with eCopy are stored in CPY files containing text, images, and page layout settings. These CPY files were stored in a format similar to PDF and recent versions of eCopy use PDF format instead. This file format is classified as Data.
  5. Ramdrive (commands) by Atari
Ramdrive was a DOS-independent ramdisk utility for using extra RAM on Atari 8-bit computers. CPY files used by Ramdrive contained commands for running the utility. This file format is classified as Executable.
  6. RM/COBOL (include data) by Liant
RM/COBOL was an integrated development environment that provided a compiler and runtime for compiling and deploying COBOL (programming language) and RM applications such as those written in Visual Basic and Delphi. Data included into COBOL source code with the "include" command were stored with CPY file extension. This file format is classified as Developer.

CPY file format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the CPY files:

The CPY file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

The remaining 35% of all CPY files are files with no common format, often e.g. EXE. If you want to find out what your CPY file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with CPY files

  • Associate the CPY file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open copy tracks. Because only the current version supports the latest CPY file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available 3DS Max update.
  • To make sure that your CPY file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .CPY file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
