What is a CQL file?

CQL files mostly belong to cqlsh. A CQL file is a plain‐text script that holds instructions written in a specialized query language.
These files are not one‐size‐fits‐all; they serve different systems by defining how data is queried or how quality measures are described.

Apache Cassandra: When the file contains Cassandra Query Language commands, it is used to create, modify, or retrieve data from a Cassandra database. Use tools like cqlsh to run these commands. For more details, check out Apache Cassandra.

Clinical Quality: In some cases, a CQL file holds Clinical Quality Language instructions. These are used in health informatics to define quality measures and clinical guidelines. More information is available at FHIR.

How to open a CQL file

You need a suitable software like cqlsh to open a CQL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CQL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CQL file directly in the browser:. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. The CQL file extension is rather rarely used and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

30% of all CQL files use the same file format, which have the signature CREATE . These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The file size is in the range of 920 bytes to 15 KB. The file type is very recent. The files contain the following words: class, CREATE KEYSPACE, CREATE TABLE, SimpleStrategy, replication_factor, text, EXISTS, WITH replication and person. Such files are related to assignment, create, export and schema, and often contain personal information.
7% of all CQL files use the same file format, which have the signature library . The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 10 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: library, using QDM version, called, include, 113883 and Common. These files are attributed to common and hedis.

All other CQL files (63%) have different formats, frequently e.g. config and INSERT. These files sometimes refer to code, search, data, queries, tables, instancecqlquery, exercise or session.
