Opening a CZI File
The CZI file type is primarily associated with ZEN.
What is a CZI file?
- Use: CZI file format has been created by Carl Zeiss to keep up with the requirements in microscopic imaging. ZEN imaging software offered by Carl Zeiss is capable of saving multidimensional data namely time-lapse, Z-stacks, multiposition experiments, and virtual slides in a CZI file. The software can use the CZI files to visualize the microscopic image in various ways and also view the additional metadata present in the file. Although ZEN software is not free, a free version of the software called ZEN Lite is offered by Carl Zeiss for basic use.
- Features: The data stored in the CZI files can be divided into four categories. Firstly, the image information data is comprised of image size, pixel type, scale information for three dimensions, and annotations. Secondly, the document information which comprises the title, subject, keywords, recording date, and user information. Thirdly, the microscopic settings that consist of microscope name, objective, reflector used, contrast method, fluorescence dyes, and table positions. Lastly, the camera settings that contain data related to the camera model, binning, exposure time, and bit depth.
How to open a CZI file
You need a suitable software like ZEN from Carl Zeiss to open a CZI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CZI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CZI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CZI file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the CZI files:
The CZI file extension is not widely used. Such a file is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 98% of all CZI files start with the bytes ZISRAWFILE crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 1 MB and 310 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The keywords ZISRAWFILE are typical for these files. Files like these are about snap, dapi, group, density, phase, brustdruesentumor, experiment, processing, airyscan, aufnahme, sample, image, stack and high.
All other CZI files (2%) have no consistent format. Just click the "Choose your .czi file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CZI file is.
Technical Data for CZI File Extension
a czi Carl Zeiss Image data file is a special file format by Carl Zeiss and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CZI files
- Associate the CZI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open carl zeiss image data files. Because only the current version supports the latest CZI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Carl Zeiss manufacturer website after an available ZEN update.
- To make sure that your CZI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CZI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
