What is a DMT file

DMT files mostly belong to DeLorme XMap. A DMT file is not a single, simple format but a container used in several distinct fields.
For many systems, it holds GPS map data in a Microsoft Compound format. This type of file, produced by DeLorme (seen in DeLorme XMap), stores geospatial information used for navigation. More details can be found at the Garmin website.
Other DMT files serve in 3D design and manufacturing. These versions include:

Delcam Machining Triangles – these files contain triangle mesh information used in programs like PowerSHAPE. See more at the Autodesk PowerSHAPE overview.

Delcam PowerMILL 3D model – these files hold 3D model data useful for machining operations and are often processed with DM Portrait Pro or PowerMill.

There is also a type that uses UTF-8 encoding for a material library. This version preserves appearance and material details for use in applications such as PGL and Creo View.
A smaller group of DMT files are actually SQLite databases. In these cases, the file holds structured data that should be viewed with a SQLite browser (SQLite).

How can I open a DMT file?

You need a suitable software like DeLorme XMap to open a DMT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DMT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DMT file directly in the browser:. DMT file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the DMT files:

An DMT file covers a large number of different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 15% of all DMT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains several sections which are named like DeLormeComponents. DMT files are between 16 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. The following filename is common: bigfootreports.dmt. Such files sometimes refer to rechnungswesen and line, and often include person-related information.
• 15% of all DMT files use the same file format, which have the signature DM. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 11 KB to 15 MB in size, with a median of 880 KB. The files contain the following words: PowerMILL and Triangles saved. A common filename is M-001.dmt.

All the rest of the DMT files (70%) have different formats, the following 9 formats can be found: PTC Creo appearance, SQL, Delcam and COPYCAD.
