All about DMT Files
The DMT file type is primarily associated with DeLorme XMap.
What is a DMT file
For many systems, it holds GPS map data in a Microsoft Compound format. This type of file, produced by DeLorme (seen in DeLorme XMap), stores geospatial information used for navigation. More details can be found at the Garmin website.
Other DMT files serve in 3D design and manufacturing. These versions include:
A smaller group of DMT files are actually SQLite databases. In these cases, the file holds structured data that should be viewed with a SQLite browser (SQLite).
FilExt.com tip: Each DMT file must be handled with the proper application since its internal structure differs. Some even hide multiple data streams within a single container, a fact that many users find surprising.
How can I open a DMT file?
You need a suitable software like DeLorme XMap to open a DMT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DMT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DMT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DMT files:
- DeLorme XMap
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DMT files are often referred to as DeLorme XMap gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Delcam Machining Triangles(3D CAD)
- Delphi (Menu Template) by Borland Software Corporation
- Street Atlas (Transfer File) by DelormeThe identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00, ASCII: ÐÏ à¡± á .
- XMap (Transfer File) by DelormeXMap scalable mapping software that provides users with digital mapping tools. Often found in the DeLorme Docs\Projects folder.
DMT file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the DMT files:
An DMT file covers a large number of different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all DMT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The file contains several sections which are named like DeLormeComponents. DMT files are between 16 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. The following filename is common: bigfootreports.dmt. Such files sometimes refer to rechnungswesen and line, and often include person-related information.
- 15% of all DMT files use the same file format, which have the signature DM. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 11 KB to 15 MB in size, with a median of 880 KB. The files contain the following words: PowerMILL and Triangles saved. A common filename is M-001.dmt.
All the rest of the DMT files (70%) have different formats, the following 9 formats can be found: PTC Creo appearance, SQL, Delcam and COPYCAD. Sometimes used for spindle, base, table, color, axis or left. If you want to find out which format your DMT file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .dmt file to analyze".
Technical Data for DMT File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\DeLorme\Street Atlas USA 2008 Plus\SA2008 .exe

a dmt multi-purpose data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DMT files
- Associate the DMT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open multi-purpose data files. Because only the current version supports the latest DMT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available DeLorme XMap update.
- To make sure that your DMT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DMT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
