What is a DUP file?

DUP files mostly belong to Pega Platform. DUP files are not a single standard format. They are used by different programs to package update data, backups, or lists of duplicate files.
For example, one common use is as a Data Update Package for the Pega Platform. In this case the file is stored in a ZIP format and holds a bundle of changes for the system.
Other uses include:

Dynon Update File: Used by Dynon SkyView Classic to deliver firmware or configuration updates.

Bridge Game Data File: Contains data for managing duplicate bridge tournaments, as seen with products from Funbridge.

Duplicate File List/Backup: Created by duplicate file finder utilities, these files store scan results and use zlib compression.

SQLite Database Backup: Employed by programs like Family Tree Maker to save database snapshots.

How to open a DUP file

You need a suitable software like Pega Platform to open a DUP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DUP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DUP file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The DUP file extension covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 45% of all DUP files are based on the zip format, so several files are compressed and saved in one DUP file. 4 to 4 compressed files with names like dup_import_script.py, standardFunctions.py, update.info and updatepack.xsd are common. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The average file size is 14 KB with most files being between 7 KB and 16 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: updatepack.xsd. A common filename is retail_bus_caps.dup or banking_bus_caps.dup. Such DUP files store data about caps, retail, banking, insurance, manufacturing, update, university, corporate and data.
• 8% of all DUP files use the same file format, which have the signature ÞÞÐÐ. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 1 MB to 97 MB in size, with a median of 21 MB. The files contain the following words: POCKET FMS. A common filename is SkyView-2020-06-01.5568-dynon_update_Classic.dup. Such files sometimes refer to classic, dynon, view and base.
