What is a DWL file?

DWL files mostly belong to AutoCAD by Autodesk. A DWL file is a temporary lock file generated when a computer user opens a drawing (DWG file) in AutoCAD. It contains information about the user who opened the file, the full path to the file, computer name, and the time (and date) when the file was opened. AutoCAD uses information saved in a DWL file to "lock" the file so that only one user has read/write access to the file at a given time. Unlike a DWG file, the DWL file is automatically deleted when the user closes the drawing. It is also used to recover corrupted drawing files.

How to open a DWL file

You need a suitable software like AutoCAD from Autodesk to open a DWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
