Opening an ECW File
The ECW file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.
What is an ECW file
How can I open an ECW file?
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an ECW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ECW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ECW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ECW file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the ECW files produces the following result:
The ECW file type is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all ECW files are Enhanced Compressed Wavelet files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 3 MB to 680 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: NUTM. Files like these have the following tags: etrs, pnoa, ortho, ortofoto, orto, anual, epsg, orthophoto and lidar.
- 2% of all ECW files are EclipseCrossword CrossWord files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 1.2 KB and 1.9 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ; Get EclipseCrossword free at, Height, Title, crossword puzzle, CodePage: 0, Author and Width: 25. Such ECW files store data about crossword.
All the rest of the ECW files (3%) have different formats, often, for example, EasyCAD for Windows drawing. Files like these are sometimes linked to mapa, eapci, tour, mapabtn, zona, interministerial, ortomosaico, mosaico, imagen, mosaic, hipso, ydray or sbhf. How to solve problems with ECW files
- Associate the ECW file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest ECW file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
- To make sure that your ECW file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ECW file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
