What is an ECW file

ECW files mostly belong to ArcGIS by ESRI. ECW filename extension is associated with compressed image files containing aerial photographs or map projection images saved in the Enhanced Compression Wavelet (ECW) file format developed by ERDAS. Due to its map projection data support, ECW format is used by many geographic information system programs such as ArcGIS and image processing software such as IrfanView and XnView. EclipseCrossword, a crossword puzzle generation software, saves crossword puzzles in ECW files. The contents of this file includes text data consisting of words and their clues, crossword author information etc. Such ECW files are typically called word lists. 2D drawings created with EasyCAD, computer aided design software, are also stored in files with ECW filename extension.

How can I open an ECW file?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an ECW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The ECW file type is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 95% of all ECW files are Enhanced Compressed Wavelet files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 3 MB to 680 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: NUTM. Files like these have the following tags: etrs, pnoa, ortho, ortofoto, orto, anual, epsg, orthophoto and lidar.
• 2% of all ECW files are EclipseCrossword CrossWord files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 1.2 KB and 1.9 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ; Get EclipseCrossword free at, Height, Title, crossword puzzle, CodePage: 0, Author and Width: 25. Such ECW files store data about crossword.

All the rest of the ECW files (3%) have different formats, often, for example, EasyCAD for Windows drawing. Files like these are sometimes linked to mapa, eapci, tour, mapabtn, zona, interministerial, ortomosaico, mosaico, imagen, mosaic, hipso, ydray or sbhf.
