Opening an ED File
The ED file type is primarily associated with CATIA.
What is an ED file?
In many cases, an ED file created by CATIA holds the geometric outlines or edge definitions of a 3D model.
FilExt.com tip: You might inspect the file header if it does not open in your expected application, as the same extension is used for different functions.
How to open an ED file
You need a suitable software like CATIA to open an ED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ED file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ED file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ED files:
- CATIA
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ED files are often referred to as CATIA cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- EasyDraw CAD File(Japanese CAD program)
- LithTech Game (Level File) by Touchdown Entertainment, Inc.Use the Lith Tools DEdit to compile the level resources. Upon compiling, the level file will become a binary .DAT file which the game uses. Related links: Lith Tools

ED file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the ED files comes to the following conclusion:
The ED file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all ED files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. ED files can be up to 9 KB in size, but are often around 280 bytes - 1 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0", encoding, EDAuthor, EDDate, UTF-8, Acc, BIC, DebetSum, ED211 EDNo, EnterBal, OutBal and CreditSum="0.
- 20% of all ED files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00 00 43 41 44 20 53 55 50 45 52 20 53 58" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 220 KB. The keywords CAD SUPER SX V4.0 are typical for these files.
All other ED files (55%) have different formats, the following 7 formats exist: PDF, WordPerfect and MHTML. Just click the "Choose your .ed file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ED file is.
Technical Data for ED File Extension

an ed CAD drawing file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ED files
- Associate the ED file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open cad drawing files. Because only the current version supports the latest ED file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CATIA update.
- To make sure that your ED file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ED file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
