Opening ERD Files
The ERD file type is primarily associated with DBeaver.
What is an ERD file?
- Main Usage: ERD files were used internally by the ERD at UMTRI for storage and analysis of vehicle test data, vehicle simulation output, laboratory measurement of vehicle component behavior, and road profiles. Engineering Plotter, a freely available plotter, can be used to view ERD files.
- Contents of ERD Files:
- Header - Stores information about how post-processing tools should read the data.
- Data - Stores numbered data that are in text or binary form.
- Associations:
- Entity Relation Diagram- ERD Entity Relation Diagram files were originally developed by DBeaver software which is an open-source SQL client software application and a database administration tool used by analysts. The Entity Relation Diagram files are graphic files containing schematic and diagrammatical presentation of database entities and relation between them with help of grid and arrows. You can view database structure diagrams and create custom diagrams as well.
- Prosa, a UML modeling tool for visual innovation and design uses ERD format for storing its Entity Relation Diagram created in the program.
How can I open an ERD file?
You need a suitable software like DBeaver to open an ERD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ERD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ERD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ERD file format details:
To view or edit ERD files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ERD files is as follows:
ERD is a very widely used file extension. The file type mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all ERD files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 120 KB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The files contain the following words: <Project>, Culture, neutral, <Name>Dynamically rendered Entity Relation Diagram</Name> and <ProjectItem type="NClass.DiagramEditor.ClassDiagram.Diagram" assembly="JourneyIntoCRM.XrmToolbox.ERDPlugin, Version=1.4.6.0. The following filename is common: Dynamically rendered Entity Relation Diagram.erd. Such files are related to solution, dynamics and entities.
- 20% of all ERD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "ER-Assistant" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 1 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ER-Assistant Document File 10001. Examples of file names are ERD1.erd or ERD_Assignment.erd. These files are often associated with assignment, module, graph, project and revise.
All the rest of the ERD files (15%) have different formats, frequently e.g. Entity Relation Diagram and DOC. Often described as assignment, module, project, management, electronic, diagrama, medical, records or core. You can get all the details of your ERD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .erd file to view" above.
Technical Data for ERD File Extension
an erd entity relationship diagram is a special file format by DBeaver Community and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ERD files
- Associate the ERD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open entity relationship diagrams. Because only the current version supports the latest ERD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the DBeaver Community manufacturer website after an available DBeaver update.
- To make sure that your ERD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ERD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
