What is an FCW file?

FCW files mostly belong to Campaign Cartographer by ProFantasy. An FCW file is a 2D or 3D drawing created with FreeCAD computer-aided design and parametric modeling software. The file comprises individual graphical objects as well as color and texture information. TurboCAD may be used to import and edit an FCW drawing. FCW is also the filename extension of a map created with Campaign Cartographer video game map design software. This file is saved in the same format as an FCW drawing created with FreeCAD. This is because Campaign Cartographer is based on FreeCAD.

How to open an FCW file

You need a suitable software like Campaign Cartographer to open an FCW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FCW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FCW file directly in the browser:. 15% of all FCW files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are combined and compressed into one FCW file. FCW files contain from 5 to 17 compressed files. File names are e.g. Bookmarks.xml, imsmanifest.xml, metadata.xml, page1.svg and settings.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are often between 32 KB and 600 KB in size. The keywords 3PRH, PR(.I, imsmanifest.xml and settings.xml are typical for these files.

How to solve problems with FCW files

Update your software that should actually open maps. Because only the current version supports the latest FCW file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ProFantasy manufacturer website after an available Campaign Cartographer update.
