Opening a FEX File
The FEX file type is primarily associated with WebFOCUS.
What is a FEX file?
This FEX file is not a single standard format. It is a file extension used in different systems to hold configuration data, report definitions, or even executable scripts.
For example, one common use is as a WebFOCUS report file. In this case, the file contains report definitions that are used by the reporting system to generate formatted output. More information is available from its provider.
Other FEX files are used on embedded systems. These files can store boot settings or firmware data for devices such as those based on Allwinner chipsets or Android environments. They are often processed with tools like fex2bin or FexTool to convert textual configuration data into a binary format understood by the device’s bootloader.
Additional examples include:
- Boot Configuration: Files that hold boot parameters or bootloader settings used in embedded devices.
- Firmware Exchange: Some FEX files serve as containers for compressed firmware images and may be used during system upgrades.
- Executable/Script Files: In rare cases, the file contains compiled scripts or binary exam files used by simulation tools.
FilExt.com tip: Because these files are developed by different companies, their internal structure and how they are used can vary. If you have an FEX file on your PC, it is best to check its header or seek vendor information to determine whether it should be opened with reporting software like WebFOCUS, a configuration tool for embedded systems, or another specialized application.
How to open FEX files
You need a suitable software like WebFOCUS to open a FEX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FEX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FEX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FEX files:
- WebFOCUS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FEX files are often referred to as WebFOCUS settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Focus File
- WebFOCUS / FOCUS / Web390 (Procedure File) by Information BuildersWebFOCUS Developer Studio, users have the ability to create applications locally and then deploy them to the Web server and the EDA Server. An application contains the procedures (.fex files), master files (.mas files), and HTML pages (.htm files) that produce the required output.
FEX format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the FEX files produces the following result:
The FEX file extension includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 15% of all FEX files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "2D 2A" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. A typical file size is 7 KB. It is a modern file type. The keywords File and Line are typical for these files. A usual file name is Accounting_Arb_Paper_Notifications_Company_Prog.fex. Files like these are about parcels, notifications, accounting, company, detail, paper, half and prog.
- 7% of all FEX files start with the magic bytes 4C 01 00 EA 65 47 4F 4E 2E 42 54 30, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 8 MB to 12 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as eGON.BT0. Some examples of file names are full_img.fex.
All other FEX files (78%) have different formats, such as EXE, XML, eGON, ANDROID and sunxi. These files sometimes refer to nand, report, package, sdcard, delinquency or item. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your FEX file!
Technical Data for FEX File Extension

How to solve problems with FEX files
- Associate the FEX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest FEX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available WebFOCUS update.
- To make sure that your FEX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
