How to open an FGD file
You need a suitable software like Valve Hammer Editor to open an FGD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FGD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FGD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FGD file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the FGD files looks like this:
FGD is not a commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all FGD files start with the bytes 30 00 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 33 MB. It is a modern file type. The file name AllInOne.fgd is typical for these files.
- 6% of all FGD files start with the magic bytes @include "base.fgd", which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. FGD files are between 410 bytes and 710 bytes in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. @include "base.fgd", @include "halflife2.fgd", "Apply the toolsinvisibleladd, "Ladder. Players will be able to move freely along this brush, as if it was a ladder." + and @SolidClass = func_ladder . The following filename is common: garrysmod.fgd.
The remaining 69% of all FGD files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats can be found: JetDB and Digital. Often described as fear or gmod. If you want to find out which format your FGD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .fgd file to analyze".

an fgd plain text configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FGD files
- Associate the FGD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open plain text configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest FGD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Valve Hammer Editor update.
- To make sure that your FGD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
