GMAX file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the GMAX files is as follows:

• 100% of all GMAX files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". Sections and streams in the file have names like ClassData, ClassDirectory3, Config, DllDirectory, DocumentSummaryInformation, Scene, SummaryInformation and ScriptedCustAttribDefs. The files are often between 160 KB and 5 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The file name high_detail_oil_rig.gmax or athlete_01.gmax is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to detail, high, scff, chassis, barge, telescopic, telescope, absorber, security, concert, spring, fence, shock, stage, bigd and coil.
