What is an HSM file?

HSM files mostly belong to Design Studio. HSM files are not tied to one single application. They are project data containers that hold structured content. The internal format varies with each use, so the file's purpose is defined by the software that created it.
Primary Application – HVAC System Files:

Used by Design Studio for HVAC projects. These files use a ZIP archive format to store system configurations and design parameters. They are sometimes known as Gira Project files and relate to ABB i-bus® Tool.

Other Use Cases:

Hypnospace Music File: In Hypnospace Outlaw, the HSM file holds music data formatted in JSON. More details are available at the official Hypnospace site.

Hit Sound Machine File: In The Sims 4, these files manage in-game audio data. They are also linked to Hitman Sound Mission files in Age of Empires II: HD Edition.

Help & Manual File: These files compile help documentation and work similarly to HTML Help Workshop files. Visit the Help & Manual website for further information.

Heroscape Map File: Used by Heroscape Master and in Age of Empires III scenarios, these files store map and scenario data. Additional insights can be found on the Heroscape site.

How to open HSM files

You need a suitable software like Design Studio to open an HSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HSM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HSM file directly in the browser:. HSM file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the HSM files:

The HSM file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 20% of all HSM files use the ZIP format, the HSM file contains a number of compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 7 to 50 files. File names are e.g. Preset1.conf, bacnet.conf, bacnetMSTP.conf, config_lang.xml, husipch.conf, version.xml, \design_6\, \preview_de\ and \preview_en\. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. HSM files are between 1 KB and 170 KB in size. Some examples of file names are 0-0.hsm or KNXUF-ICONSET.hsm.
• 15% of all HSM files save the data in JSON file format. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 180 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as c2array, data, size, true and 14319355.
