Opening an ICLOUD File
The ICLOUD file type is primarily associated with iCloud Drive.
What is an ICLOUD file
They are formatted as a property list (plist) file that holds key details about the file, such as its storage location and sync status. Most of these files guide the system to locate the actual content in the cloud. A minor set uses the Mac2OSX format, but both types serve the same purpose: to act as placeholders on your device.
- Format: Typically a plist file with structured key-value entries.
- Purpose: Functions as a pointer to cloud-stored data.
- Usage: Automatically managed by iCloud Drive on macOS and iOS.
- Role: Acts as a file placeholder so you know what should be in your folder even if the content is not locally stored.

ICLOUD file format:
To find out what program is needed to open ICLOUD files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ICLOUD files looks like this:
The ICLOUD file extension is quite common and mainly uses a defined ICLOUD format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 97% of all ICLOUD files are iCloud Drive by Apple files, which are based on the plist file format. A property list file is a structured text file that contains user's settings or macOS apps configuration. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are on average 170 bytes in size and range from 160 bytes to 190 bytes. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: NSURLFileSizeKey_, bplist00, \NSURLNameKey_, NSURLFileResourceTypeRegular and NSURLFileResourceTypeKey_. Such ICLOUD files store data about docx, pptx, sqlite, html, notes, pages, guide, exam and life.
- 2% of all ICLOUD files store the data in the Mac2OSX file format. The Mac2OSX format is an AppleDouble format and originally used to store additional metadata on Unix systems. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 170 bytes to 750 bytes in size, with a median of 370 bytes. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ATTR, Mac OS X and com.apple.icloud.itemName.
The remaining 1% of all ICLOUD files are different files with different signatures. These files sometimes refer to myactivity, project, plist, study, book or xlsx. You can get all the details of your ICLOUD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .icloud file to analyze" above.
