What is an IDMS file?

IDMS files mostly belong to InDesign by Adobe. An IDMS file contains a reusable design snippet created by InDesign layout design and publishing software. This file is created when a user selects and drags one or more objects outside of InDesign's editor to the desktop. It contains a subset of a design document which may be reused across multiple sections of a design or multiple design documents. Apart from storing a snippet, an IDMS file also describes the position of an object relative to other objects on a page.

Can't Open Your .IDMS File? Try These Steps

Because .IDMS files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable.

1. Identify the Source: If received from a graphic designer or a publishing workflow, it is likely an Adobe InDesign page layout snippet.
