What is a KRA file?

KRA files mostly belong to Krita by Krita Foundation. KRA files are paintings (images) created with Krita, a graphics editor for creating digital paintings. The KRA file serves as a compressed container that comprises one or more image layers, strokes, color information, effects, masks and metadata. The completed painting in a KRA file may be exported to JPG, GIF, or PNG file format. Krita is available for Windows, MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and Android devices.

How to open KRA files

You need a suitable software like Krita from Krita Foundation to open a KRA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your KRA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a KRA file directly in the browser:. To view or edit KRA files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the KRA files is as follows:

KRA is one of the most common file extensions and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 96% of all KRA files use the ZIP algorithm, multiple files are compressed and combined into one KRA file. A typical number of included files is 15. File names are e.g. documentinfo.xml, maindoc.xml, mergedimage.png, mimetype and preview.png. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 420 KB to 17 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. maindoc.xml and mimetypeapplication/x-kritaPK. These files can be linked to autosave, logo, girl, animation, character, filed, krita and sketch.
• 1% of all KRA files use the same file format, which have the signature !HFA##. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 20 KB and 100 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !HFA## and ISD Software & Systeme GmbH - Dortmund.
