What is an L5K file?

L5K files mostly belong to RSLogix 5000. L5K files are RSLogix 5000 project files used in programming industrial controllers. These files contain the logic and configuration data for a programmable logic controller (PLC) in a plain text format, often encoded in UTF-8.

This file stores the ladder logic and configuration settings for an automation system.

It is designed for use by RSLogix 5000 software, a tool for developing and managing PLC programs.

Although you can open an L5K file in a text editor to view its contents, the best practice is to use RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 Logix Designer to make edits or re-import the project.

The file plays a key role in transferring and archiving project data within the Rockwell Automation ecosystem.

How do you open L5K files?

You need a suitable software like RSLogix 5000 to open an L5K file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your L5K file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a L5K file directly in the browser:. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are text files, so they contain words and text. Most of these files are 4 KB to 3 MB in size. • 9% of all L5K files start with the bytes (*********************************************, which are crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. L5K files are between 22 KB and 10 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as (***********, Exported, Import-Export, Owner, RSLogix 5000 and Version.
