All about MDV Files
The MDV file type is primarily associated with Stoll M1Plus / Autodesk Inventor.
What is an MDV file?
MDV files come in two forms. One form uses the Microsoft Compound format to store M1Plus design data. This type is known as the Stoll M1Plus pattern file and is used in specialized design processes.
The other form is based on a ZIP container. It holds 3D model data and contains a zipped AML (AutomationML) model. This variant is produced by Autodesk Inventor. For further details on Autodesk Inventor, visit Autodesk Inventor's webpage.
- Opening:
Use a dedicated M1Plus viewer for the compound version or Autodesk Inventor/ZIP extraction tools for the ZIP-based file. - Usage:
They store design patterns and 3D model data, with the proper tool needed to access their content.

How to open an MDV file
You need a suitable software like Stoll M1Plus / Autodesk Inventor to open an MDV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MDV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MDV file directly in the browser:. MDV file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the MDV files produces the following result:
MDV is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in MDV files:
- 55% of all MDV files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The internal app name of MDV files is M1plus. The file contains several sections which are named like Adaro, Compressed, CountMatchModules, KS-DATA, MDE, MatchModules, ModBarGroup, Modules, MusterBitmap, Nas-Sequenz-Data, NewModuleDatabase, SIN_TBS, TPA, Version, class M3_MDV_MLTable, SummaryInformation, class M3_MDV_VKTable, M3_MusterDisplayParameter, Mc-OutputData, class M3_MDV_NPZTable and class M3_MDV_VNPTable. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 260 KB to 2 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The file name 255F157C-M-H.mdv is typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to back and front.
- 10% of all MDV files start with the bytes 00 00 00 01 34 00 crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 1 MB.
All other MDV files (35%) have no uniform format, the following 3 formats exist: ZIP. If you want to find out what your MDV file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for MDV File Extension
an mdv proprietary design file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MDV files
- Associate the MDV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open proprietary design files. Because only the current version supports the latest MDV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Stoll M1Plus / Autodesk Inventor update.
- To make sure that your MDV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MDV file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
