Opening an MLD File
The MLD file type is primarily associated with Passolo.
What is an MLD file?
Other uses include:
- Microscopy data: These files can store medical image layer data from Leica microscopy systems. Check details at Leica Microsystems.
- Logical data models: Some MLD files use an XML format to define logical data models. They work with tools like PowerDesigner for database design. More information is available at SAP.
- Ringtone melodies: Certain MLD files hold melody data for ringtones on Yamaha mobile devices, sometimes called Mobile Melody Data Files.
- Database schemas: A few files store conceptual data models, as seen in MoCoDo database schema files used in database design.
- Machine data: Other MLD files contain machine or mold data used in industrial contexts, managed by tools like the Arburg ALS MLD Manager. More details can be found at Arburg.
- KSC data: Some files serve as KSC data files in specialized data storage systems.
FilExt.com tips: The file structure depends on its intended use. Opening the file in a text editor may reveal XML elements or specific formatting that indicates its purpose. Use the correct application linked to its data type to view or modify its contents.

MLD format details:
To find out what program is needed to open MLD files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the MLD files produces the following result:
MLD is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in MLD files are:
- 25% of all MLD files start with the bytes ML, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 7 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 460 KB. The file type was used 20 years ago. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as English and Native. The file name Translations.mld is typical for these files.
- 15% of all MLD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "LDFF" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 1 KB to 9 MB in size. The keywords LDFF are typical for these files. The file name LayerData.mld is characteristic of these files.
The remaining 60% of all MLD files are different files with different signatures, the following 6 formats exist: XML, KSC, database and melo. Tagged as shot or ring. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MLD file!
