Opening MODEL Files
The MODEL file type is primarily associated with CATIA.
What is a MODEL file
How do you open MODEL files?
You need a suitable software like CATIA to open a MODEL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MODEL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MODEL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MODEL file format:
To find out what program is needed to open MODEL files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the MODEL files:
The MODEL extension is very commonly used. This MODEL file itself is among the most popular common file types and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in MODEL files:
- 15% of all MODEL files are using the well-known HDF5 file format to store the data. HDF5 is short for Hierarchical Data Format version 5. It is an open source file format for storing and organizing large amounts of data. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 1 MB to 59 MB in size, with a median of 11 MB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords TREE are typical for these files. Examples of file names are mask_detector.model or covid19.model. Files like these are sometimes connected to detector, mask, detection, gender, improvement, parameters, pokedex, handwriting, multiclass, baseline and santa.
- 9% of all MODEL files have no uniform signature. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 8 KB to 39 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. word, Word2Vec, models and cgensim. word2vec.model is a typical file name. These files are attributed to word, classifier, monotherapy, predictor, anomaly, finish and cifar.
All the rest of the MODEL files (76%) have different formats, often, for example, Custom Maid 3D 2 Model, Java, XML, ZIP, CATIA, VBIN, WESYS, MOD, Relic, STEF, AppleOpenGLDemoModelWWDC and KTMDL. Often described as dmodel, lootbag, face, criminal, body or sydney. You can get all the details of your MODEL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .model file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for MODEL File Extension
a model 3D model is a special file format by Dassault Systèmes and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MODEL files
- Associate the MODEL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d models. Because only the current version supports the latest MODEL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dassault Systèmes manufacturer website after an available CATIA update.
- To make sure that your MODEL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MODEL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
