What is a MOT file?

MOT files mostly belong to LightWave 3D by NewTek. MOT file extension is often associated with files containing 3D motion data created using LightWave 3D, a 3D image/animation modeler and renderer. Contents of such MOT files include movement keyframes for nine channels of a single object and camera which the program uses to save animation coordinates. This data is stored in ASCII text format. OpenSim, a free software package for building, analyzing, and exchanging computer models and dynamic simulations of movement for the musculoskeletal system, also uses MOT format to store motion data such as joint angles and ground reaction data. Several distributions of Linux operating system use MOT format to store load instructions. MarcEdit, a metadata editing tool for MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) software stores templates in MOT files. Sharp GX series cell phones stored firmware updates in MOT files. Motorola JADE S3 and several older phones also used MOT as an audio file format.

How to open a MOT file

You need a suitable software like LightWave 3D to open a MOT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MOT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MOT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MOT files:

  1. LightWave 3D by NewTek
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MOT files are often referred to as LightWave 3D 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. GX cellphones (firmware update) by Sharp
GX series cellphones were a brand of tri-band GSM mobile phones manufactured by Sharp. System updates for GX series Sharp cellphones were stored in MOT files. Such data are essentially the image of the Sharp GX series cell phones' operating system. This file format is classified as Disk Image. Related links: List of Sharp mobile phones
  3. JADE (ringtone) by Motorola
JADE is a brand of Motorola cellphones. The phone used Motorola's proprietary S-record file format to store ringtones. The format conveyed binary data as hexadecimal values in ASCII text format. This file format is classified as Audio. Related links: SREC (file format)
  4. Linux (load instruction) by Linus Torvalds and the Linux Developer Community
Linux is largely free and open-source family of operating systems that was originally developed by Linus Torvalds and released in 1991. Some Linux distributions store load instructions in MOT files. This file format is classified as System.
  5. Pamela (phoneme translation data) by Monash University
Pamela is a lipsync utility for translating WAV files containing speech data to Moho data files which control the appearance of a 3D model's lips' appearance during speech simulation. The MOT files used by Pamela contain data form translating one set of phonemes to another. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: MOT Files, Moho

MOT file format details:

To view or edit MOT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MOT files looks like this:

MOT is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

All other MOT files (42%) have different formats, the following 13 formats can be found: LightWave Motion data, Java, hspv, subject, Data, Coordinates, MOT, normal and ENCRYPT. Sometimes used for walk, subject, mask, burah, danko or data. If you want to find out which format your MOT file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mot file to view".

How to solve problems with MOT files

  • Associate the MOT file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open 3d motion data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MOT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the NewTek manufacturer website after an available LightWave 3D update.
  • To make sure that your MOT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MOT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
