All about OPI Files
The OPI file type is primarily associated with Opigno Training Manager.
What is an OPI file?
- ZIP-based training packages: Most OPI files are built as a ZIP archive containing an Opigno activity/module or training package. These files are meant to be loaded into the Opigno Training Manager. For more details, check the official Opigno website.
- MP4 video files: some use the MP4 container. They may either be simple video files or follow the Open Packaging Conventions to bundle image data. This use is linked with companies like Opiumud and MP4Player.
- OmniPass identity files: some of OPI files store identity or password information. Known as an OmniPass identity file, they are associated with HP SimplePass. More information is available at HP Support.
- Operator Interface files: The remaining variants include files used for instrumentation and process control. One type is referred to as Open Pluggable Instrumentation (often linked with LabVIEW), and another is an Open Process Interface file, structured in XML for tools such as OPI Builder and OPG Systems Simulator (Eclipse).
FilExt.com note: These OPI files share the same extension despite using different underlying formats. To open and view a file, identify its internal structure – check if it behaves like a ZIP archive, an MP4 video, an XML document, or a proprietary identity file – and then use the corresponding software.
How to open an OPI file
You need a suitable software like Opigno Training Manager to open an OPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OPI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

OPI file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the OPI files:
OPI is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in OPI files:
- 45% of all OPI files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one OPI file. Most often they are 1 to 30 compressed files. Common included file names are export-opigno_activity.json and \library\. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are 500 bytes to 5 MB in size, with a median of 700 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. export, json and training. These files are attributed to opigno, training, activity, information, technology, latest, course and introduction.
- 20% of all OPI files are based on the well-known MP4 file format. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. OPI files are between 75 MB and 75 MB in size. The keywords \tkhd, ftypmp42, lmvhd, moov, free, trak and ~mp42isom are typical for these files. A common filename is Opiumud - Helena - The Life of Beast.OPI. These files are attributed to movie.
All other OPI files (35%) have no consistent format, often, for example, OmniPass exported user. These files are often connected to response, pass, workplace, backup, module, participate, strategies, conscious, interface, health, hltwhs, safety, simple, acco or omni. an opi container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with OPI files
- Associate the OPI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest OPI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Opigno Training Manager update.
- To make sure that your OPI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
