What is an OXT file

OXT files mostly belong to LibreOffice. OXT files are used as add-ons in office suites such as LibreOffice and OpenOffice. They are built as ZIP archives that package extra modules for extending the software’s capabilities.

How to open an OXT file

You need a suitable software like LibreOffice to open an OXT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OXT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OXT file directly in the browser:. OXT format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the OXT files:

The OXT file extension is quite common and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 95% of all OXT files use the ZIP format, i.e. an OXT file contains several compressed files. 7 to 60 compressed files are common. File names inside are description.xml, dictionaries.xcu and \META-INF\manifest.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 97 KB to 6 MB in size. Examples of file names are dict-en-20180601.oxt. Such files sometimes refer to dict, frami, vrtnetworkequipment, office, thesaurus, open, dictionaries, deutscher, language, writer, pack and tool.
• 2% of all OXT files are based on the well-known UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 46 KB. The files contain the following words: Version 2 30. The following filename is common: global.oxt.

The remaining 3% of all OXT files are different files with different signatures. Often described as integration, windows, zotero, czech, grammalecte, lirecouleur, dictionary, numbertext, hunspell, import, latex or libre.
