All about PAINT Files
The PAINT file type is primarily associated with Paintbrush.
What is a PAINT file?
In one case, they are created by Apple's macOS drawing app (Paintbrush). These files use an internal plist (Property List) format to store drawing data and instructions. This means the file holds structured XML data, which includes details about the drawing elements and configuration.
In another case, PAINT files are used by Paint.NET for pixel art. Here the file acts as a raster image file that stores pixel‐by‐pixel art data.

PAINT file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the PAINT files:
PAINT is a very common file type and mainly uses a defined PAINT format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 98% of all PAINT files save the data in plist file format. A property list file is a structured text file that contains user's settings or macOS apps configuration. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 1 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: U$null, WNS.dataV$classO, bplist00, NSKeyedArchiver, X$versionY$archiverT$topX$objects, YPaintDataZResolutionWVersion and X$versionX$objectsY$archiverT$top. Files like these have the following tags: logo, plan, design, page, screen, image, signature and layout.
The remaining 2% of all PAINT files are files with no common format. They are often associated with shot, diagram, banner, card, side, question, template, website, update, table or edit. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PAINT file!
