Opening a PANO File
The PANO file type is primarily associated with Carestream Imaging.
What is a PANO file?
PANO files are used in several specific imaging contexts. The primary use is as a DICOM file that holds a dental panoramic radiograph. This format is employed by Carestream Imaging Software for storing and viewing full-mouth X-ray images.
Other uses include:
- 360 Photo Format: Some PANO files use a ZIP container to hold a 360° panoramic image. Applications like Microsoft Photosynth or PTGui create these containers.
- Panorama Project File: A minority of PANO files use an XML format to store project settings for panoramic image stitching. This is used by Autopano Giga/Autopano Video. For more details, you may visit this page.
FilExt.com tips: To open a dental panoramic (PANO) file, use a dedicated DICOM viewer such as those provided by Carestream Dental (Carestream Dental). Files in ZIP format can be examined with archive tools and then viewed in specialized panoramic imaging software. XML-based project files may be opened with text editors or specific project software.
How to open a PANO file
You need a suitable software like Carestream Imaging to open a PANO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PANO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PANO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PANO files:
- Carestream Imaging
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PANO files are often referred to as Carestream Imaging raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Quicktime (VR Panorama File) by Apple Inc.A movie’s panorama track is a track that contains information about the panoramic nodes in a scene. The media type of the panorama track is 'pano'. Each sample in a panorama track corresponds to a single panoramic node. This file format is classified as Graphics.
PANO file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the PANO files is as follows:
PANO is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined PANO format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all PANO files are based on the popular DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 1 MB to 3 MB in size, with a median of 2 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.1.1.1.1.1 and DICM are typical for these files. A common filename is P1.pano or P2.pano.
- 6% of all PANO files are based on the zip format, the PANO file contains a number of compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 20 to 91 files with names like [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \formats\, \formats\cubemap\atlas.jpg, \formats\cubemap\bottom\, \formats\cubemap\bottom\10\0_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\bottom\10\1_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\bottom\9\0_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\cubemap.json, \formats\cubemap\front\, \formats\cubemap\front\10\0_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\10\1_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\11\0_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\11\1_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\11\2_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\11\3_1.jpg, \formats\cubemap\front\9\0_1.jpg and \properties\. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 420 KB and 1 MB in size. The files contain the following words: JFIF and formats/cubemap/atlas.jpg. WIN_20180601.pano or LIAM - WIN_20180601.pano is a typical file name. Such PANO files store data about person-related data.
All other PANO files (9%) have no uniform format, such as XML. These files are often connected to images, group or node. Just click the "Choose your .pano file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your PANO file is.
Technical Data for PANO File Extension
a pano image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PANO files
- Associate the PANO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open image files. Because only the current version supports the latest PANO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Carestream Imaging update.
- To make sure that your PANO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PANO file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
