What is a PBO file

PBO files mostly belong to Source Profiler by Microsoft. A PBO file is an archive containing data used in Operation Flashpoint and ARMA video games. This archive is called a "packed bank of files" and it is compressed using the LZSS compression method. Such a PBO file usually contains all data for a mission (its terrain, characters, layout, scenes etc.). It may also be used to store add-ons. Steam video game distribution and management software uses a different type of PBO file to save game data. A VCF based format uses PBO files to save contacts. The Source Profiler in Visual C++ saves its binary output in PBO files.

How to open PBO files

You need a suitable software like Source Profiler to open a PBO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBO file directly in the browser:. To view or edit PBO files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the PBO files is as follows:

The PBO file extension is quite common and mainly uses a defined PBO format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 80% of all PBO files belong to Packed Bohemia Object game data archive. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 33 KB to 220 MB in size, with a median of 15 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. sreV, prefix, version, DePbo, Mikero and config.bin. Files like these are about weapons, scripts, server, chernarusplus, worlds, altis, characters, data and dayz.
• 7% of all PBO files have the same signature BEGIN:VCARD VERSION:2.1 . If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 14 KB to 98 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BEGIN:VCARD, VERSION:2.1, END:VCARD, CELL, CHARSET, UTF-8 and ENCODING. An example of a file name is contacts.pbo. Such PBO files store data about phone.

The remaining 13% of all PBO files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. mission. Files like these are sometimes linked to chernarus, system, missions, vehicles, mission, objects, stratis, custom, ratnik, trader, exile, items, card, menu or void.
