PCO files mostly belong to PhysioControl CaseView.
About PCO Files:
Most PCO files are Physio Control reports that store detailed event and patient data using a Microsoft Compound file structure. They are a container that holds multiple streams, which means different types of data can coexist in one file.

- Outline Processor Files: A smaller group comes from PCOutline applications, storing outline structures and document data.

How to open PCO files
You need a suitable software like PhysioControl CaseView to open a PCO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the PCO files:
The PCO file ending predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all PCO files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 456b4ab8-0994-49d9-abc1-be55a1bb13c9 or c11ac8ef-0044-42c6-a4c5-4497ad1c4e34. The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are CaseFileSummary, CaseObj, Episodes, XML and DirCheck. The files are 100 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 530 KB. The file type is relatively new. A usual file name is PhysioControlCaseView.pco. Such PCO files store data about medic, orleans, report and lpcr.
- 10% of all PCO files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " OUTLINE FORMAT #1 #1 #1 " at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 13 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as OUTLINE FORMAT #1 #1 #1.
