Opening a PEC File
The PEC file type is primarily associated with Silhouette Studio.
What is a PEC file?
For embroidery, a PEC file is a Brother embroidery design file that holds stitch instructions, layout details, and pattern data. It works with embroidery machines and programs such as Silhouette Studio (Silhouette America).
In furniture design, a PEC file may be a compressed archive (using ZIP) containing a 3D model and related assets. This type is handled by software like pCon.planner (pCon.planner).
Some PEC files are also used to store configuration data for photo editing programs. They save settings that control editor behavior.
How to open PEC files
You need a suitable software like Silhouette Studio to open a PEC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PEC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PEC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PEC files:
- Silhouette Studio
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PEC files are often referred to as Silhouette Studio data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Brother/Babylock/Bernina Home Embroidery FormatThis file contains stitches and is used by Babylock, Bernina and Brother home embroidery machines. Edit/convert using Embird Plus. Related links: Pfaff Creative VIP Software, Embird Plus, Format Foundry
PEC file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the PEC files comes to the following conclusion:
The PEC file extension is not common and includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 25% of all PEC files are Brother/Babylock/Bernina Home Embroidery format files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 4 KB and 49 KB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as PEC0001LA.
- 6% of all PEC files are based on the popular certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are often between 5 KB and 11 KB in size. These files can be linked to ivdipbin.
All other PEC files (69%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. PhotoEditor. These files sometimes refer to report, editor or photo. If you want to find out what your PEC file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with PEC files
- Associate the PEC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized design files. Because only the current version supports the latest PEC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Silhouette Studio update.
- To make sure that your PEC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PEC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
