Opening a PEI File
The PEI file type is primarily associated with 7-Zip.
What is a PEI file?
PEI files serve two distinct roles. In one case, they are compressed archive files using the ZIP format. These files bundle game data—such as textures, models, and scripts—for use in Predator: Hunting Grounds. You can open these packages with archive tools like 7-Zip. For more on how these game packages work, visit the Unreal Engine website.
In another case, a PEI file is an embroidery design file. It stores stitch sequences and layout details for embroidery projects. Such files are handled by specialized editing software, like the Polysoft Packet Editor. Additional details are available at the PE Explorer website.

How do you open PEI files?
You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open a PEI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PEI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PEI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PEI file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the PEI files comes to the following conclusion:
The PEI file extension is not common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all PEI files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one PEI file. A PEI file includes 3 to 130 files. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are 4 MB to 51 GB in size, with a median of 5 GB. A common filename is data01.pei or data03.pei.
- 6% of all PEI files start with the magic bytes 0F 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 68 bytes to 70 bytes in size.
All other PEI files (34%) have no uniform format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PEI file!
