What is a PHD file?

PHD files mostly belong to HeapAnalyzer by IBM. PHD is a heapdump file format used by the IBM Java software development kit (SDK). A PHD heapdump file contains a header, plus a number of records that describe objects, arrays, and classes.

Structure: The general structure of a PHD file consists of these elements:

The UTF string portable heap dump;
An integer containing the PHD version number;
An integer containing flags (A value of 1 indicates that the word length is 64-bit, while a value of 2 indicates that all the objects in the dump are hashed.);
A byte containing a tag (value of 1) that indicates the start of the header;
A number of header records (optional); A byte containing the "start of dump" body tag (value of 2);
A number of dump records;
A byte containing a tag (value of 3) that indicates the end of the heapdump.

Versions: Different versions of the Java 9 (J9) Virtual Machine (VM) produce different versions of the PHD file: VM version 2.7 produces PHD version 6; VM versions 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 produce PHD version 5; VM version 2.3 produces PHD version 4 (Before service refresh 10; Afterwards PHD version 5).

How to open PHD files

You need a suitable software like HeapAnalyzer to open a PHD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
