What is a PLJ file?

PLJ files mostly belong to Photos.app. Apple Photos Library Journal: These files, making up some of PLJ cases, are used by Photos.app on macOS. They store internal photo library data in a binary property list format. This file keeps essential metadata and configuration details that the Photos app relies on.

How to open a PLJ file

You need a suitable software like Photos.app to open a PLJ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PLJ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PLJ file directly in the browser:. PLJ file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the PLJ files looks like this:

PLJ is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 65% of all PLJ files do not have a uniform signature. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. PLJ files can be up to 62 MB in size, but are often around 270 bytes - 10 MB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: bplist00 and migrationDate. The following filename is common: MigrationHistory-change.plj or Asset-snapshot.plj. Such PLJ files store data about detected, album and face.
• 10% of all PLJ files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". PLJ files contain an app name Plus-2D. The internal containers are called Contents and SummaryInformation. Most of these files are 6 KB to 16 KB in size.
