- Rayshade by Stanford University
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RAY files are often referred to as Rayshade 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Lighttools (light rays) by SynopsysLighttools is a 3D design software used for modelling and rendering photorealistic light simulations of different systems. The data used to generate light simulations in Lighttools are stored in RAY files. This file format is classified as Data.
- LucidShape (automotive light rays) by SynopsysLucidShape is a suite of 3D design software for creating, analyzing, and simulating automotive light rays in real-time. RAY files contain the data which LucidShape uses to model and simulate light systems. This file format is classified as Data.
RAY file format:
To find out what program is needed to open RAY files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the RAY files produces the following result:
RAY is not a common file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in RAY files:
- 35% of all RAY files start with the bytes LTRF crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 2 MB and 150 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as LTRF. These files can be linked to light, tools, binary, rays, rayfile and blue.
- 7% of all RAY files start with the magic bytes SBT-raytracer, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 390 bytes to 2 KB. The keywords SBT-raytracer 1.0, camera and position are typical for these files.
All the rest of the RAY files (58%) have different formats, such as zMu. Files like these are sometimes linked to lucid, luxeon, royal, speos, trace, simulux, format, series, shape or plpt. Just click the "Choose your .ray file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your RAY file is.
