All about RCV Files
The RCV file type is primarily associated with Dell BIOS Update Utility.
What is an RCV file?
RCV files are not a single type of file. Their purpose depends on the application that created them.
For example, some RCV files are executable files used to update the BIOS on Dell systems. In these cases the file works with the Dell BIOS Update Utility. You can learn more on the Dell website.
Other RCV files are used to store design data. They are often compressed (in a ZIP format) and serve as CAD or 3D model design files. Programs like RoofCon Viewer read these files.
There are also RCV files that work as messaging or backup files. Some serve as CargoIMP message files for cargo messaging systems (see the details on the Descartes page), while others are recovery files created by applications such as Outlook Express (Microsoft Support).
Additional uses include RCV files that store structured XML data for systems like Infor M3 (Infor) and files used for receipts or electronic data interchange (EDI) payment remittance.
If you have an RCV file, it is important to know its origin. Use the corresponding software (for example, Dell BIOS Update Utility for system updates or RoofCon Viewer for CAD data) to open and view the file properly.
- Dell BIOS Update File (executable used for firmware updates)
- CAD/3D Model File (compressed file for design data)
- Cargo Messaging File (for shipping and logistics messages)
- Recovery/Backup Archive (for Outlook Express data recovery)
- XML Data File (structured data for ERP systems)
- Receipt/Remittance File (used in EDI and office applications)
FilExt.com tip: Always check the file’s source and use a tool suited to its specific type.
How to open RCV files
You need a suitable software like Dell BIOS Update Utility to open an RCV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RCV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RCV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RCV files:
- Dell BIOS Update Utility
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RCV files are often referred to as Dell BIOS Update Utility executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Resource Compiler; Resource Script
RCV file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the RCV files comes to the following conclusion:
An RCV file covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all RCV files are based on the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 6 MB to 21 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. A usual file name is BIOS_IMG.rcv. These files can be linked to bios, inspiron and vostro.
- 15% of all RCV files are based on the zip format, that is, an RCV file includes multiple compressed files. An RCV file can contain up to 270 files (mostly 25 - 120). Common included file names are Frame1.seq, PLATE1.BMP, PLATE1.bmp, PLYWOOD.BMP, PROF1.BMP, ROOF1.BMP, T1.tci, WALL04Y.BMP, WALL05G.BMP, WALL1.BMP, WALL1.bmp, WOOD01G.BMP, WOOD01L.BMP, WOOD1.BMP and ceil1.bmp. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. RCV files are between 500 KB and 2 MB in size. The file name project.rcv is typical for these files.
All the rest of the RCV files (55%) have different formats, often e.g. XML. They are often associated with recovery, mahasiswa, pajak, prak, inforcentral, header or remit. If you want to find out which format your RCV file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rcv file to analyze".
Technical Data for RCV File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Source Insight 3\insight3.exe
an rcv executable file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RCV files
- Associate the RCV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open executable files. Because only the current version supports the latest RCV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Dell BIOS Update Utility update.
- To make sure that your RCV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
