What is a RIN file?

RIN files mostly belong to RIN Reader. RIN files are not one uniform format. They serve different purposes depending on which application created them.

Italian Tax Data: Some RIN files store tax records or healthcare patient data used in Italy. These files work with software like RIN Reader.

Sage Reports: Other files appear as report files from Sage 50 Accounts. They may hold data from a Progress OpenEdge database. For more details, visit Sage.

Music Metadata: A group of RIN files is based on XML and holds music recording metadata. These files use structured text and are handled by tools such as the DDEX RIN Validator. More info is available at DDEX Service.

How do you open RIN files?

You need a suitable software like RIN Reader to open a RIN file. The RIN file extension is rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 40% of all RIN files start with the bytes A1 crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 760 bytes to 18 KB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Files like these are about person-related data.
• 15% of all RIN files start with the magic bytes 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 02, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 75 KB.
