What is a RIV file?

RIV files mostly belong to Rive. Rive Animation Files: Most RIV files are used by the Rive tool to store interactive, vector-based animations. These files hold information about shapes, motion, and state machines that let animations respond to events in real time.

Purpose: They act as compact animation assets for use in apps, games, and websites.

How it works: The file contains drawing instructions and state logic so the animation can change dynamically.

How to open RIV files

You need a suitable software like Rive to open a RIV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RIV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RIV file directly in the browser:. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the RIV files:

The RIV file type is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 95% of all RIV files use the same file format, which have the signature RIVE. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 540 bytes to 34 KB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. The files contain the following words: RIVE and New Artboard. An example of a file name is splashscreen.riv or new_file.riv. Such files sometimes refer to animation, splash, anim, loading, logo, road, vehicles, reload and theme.
• 2% of all RIV files start with the bytes YDFF crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 180 KB to 1 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Sontek, YDFF, ApplicationOptions, InstrumentOptions, SystemComponentInfo, VTodBmCoefs and YTS_DEFS_RESOURCE. The file name 20180601.riv is characteristic of these files.
