What is an RN file?

RN files mostly belong to RealPlayer/React Native. The RN extension does not point to a single, standard file type. Instead, these files act as containers for different data depending on the source.

• React Native assets: Some RN files hold binary data used in the React Native framework. In these cases, they may store image data (even JPEGs) or bundle JavaScript code that runs within apps.

• Encrypted documents: In some instances, the RN extension is used for encrypted files—often labeled as the Relativity Native File Format—and these are managed with the Relativity Desktop Client.

How to open RN files

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). The RN file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all RN files use the same file format, which have the signature ÛüÛ. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 45 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 250 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 4nbmb and $'$$$%$&$$%.
• 10% of all RN files are based on the popular MP4 file format. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 320 KB and 5 MB in size. The keywords \tkhd, lmvhd, ftypisom, isomiso2avc1mp41, trak and moov are typical for these files.
