All about SCL Files
The SCL file type is primarily associated with Scala.
What is an SCL file?
- Main Usage: The SCL file contains one or more chord diagrams, which include the corresponding finger placements in a musical score for playing multiple instruments, such as the guitar or trumpet. Furthermore, the SCL files can be shared between users such that multiple users are able to access the musical scores for multiple instruments corresponding to a single melody. The Sibelius software allows the user to open, edit, and remove chord diagrams directly through the program interface, thus reducing the need to manually delete data files externally of the software.
- Alternatives: SCL files are also associated with the Scala software, a program for experimenting with music tunings. The SCL files contain the generated musical scales and store them in ASCII. Due to this, these files are human redable ASCII files or 8-bit character text files. Moreover, SCL files can also be associated with Pro/ENGINEER, a 3D product design software that features productivity tools that promote the best practices in design, while ensuring compliance with industry and company standards.
How do you open SCL files?
You need a suitable software like Scala to open an SCL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SCL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SCL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SCL files:
- Scala by Manuel Op de Coul
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SCL files are often referred to as Scala simple text files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Creo (system color file) by PTCCreo is a suite of 3D computer aided design/manufacturing/engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) software. It has replaced PTC's older product, Pro/Engineer. The SCL file format is used by a custom color file in Creo. The file stores custom settings for system colors in Creo. This file format is classified as Settings. - Sibelius (chord diagram library) by Avid TechnologySibelius is a scorewriter software that allows composers to produce sheet music. It also allows them to playback the written scores using sampled or synthesized sounds. The SCL file format stores a chord diagram library in Sibelius. This file format is classified as Data. - SuperCopier (SuperCopier copy list) by BRULE HermanSuperCopier is a file copying software for Windows. An SCL file stores a SuperCopier copy list. The file is also used by UltraCopier, another software from the same developer. This file format is classified as Data. SCL file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the SCL files looks like this:
The SCL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in SCL files are:
- 9% of all SCL files are Siemens TIA Structured Control Language data block files, which are using the popular Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 3 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 52 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords VERSION : 0.1, { S7_Optimized_Access := 'TRUE' }, VAR_INPUT, FUNCTION_BLOCK and False are typical for these files. These files are often associated with control and bits.
- 8% of all SCL files are using the well-known .NET file format to store the data. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 1 KB and 22 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Version, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null, RSharekhan and System.Collections.Generic.List`1[[Sharekhan.TradeTiger.Global.MarketWatchItem, Sharekha. A usual file name is BIGTRADEPLUS.scl or MarketWatch-0.scl. These files are attributed to market, watch, nifty, bigtradelist and optionsxlt.
All the rest of the SCL files (83%) have different formats, often, for example, Sinclair TR-DOS disk image, Samsung Kies backup, Sick CLV Script Configuration Language, SnapCal encrypted Graphite data, FrontDesigner Scale setting, Source, Unreal, XML, MaxValue, Data, SACL and TYPE. Sometimes used for data, list, scrip, universal, email or types. You can get all the details of your SCL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .scl file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with SCL files
- Associate the SCL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scala scales. Because only the current version supports the latest SCL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Manuel Op de Coul manufacturer website after an available Scala update.
- To make sure that your SCL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SCL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
