SDE files mostly belong to ArcGIS Desktop. SDE files are not a single file type; they are used by different software systems to store specific settings and data. How do you open SDE files?

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS Desktop to open an SDE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit SDE files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the SDE files:

SDE is rarely used as a file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 35% of all SDE files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The internal containers are called SDEConnProperties. Most of these files are 3 KB to 66 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Files like these have the following tags: connection.
• 25% of all SDE files use ZIP compression, i.e. an SDE file contains several compressed files. Such a ZIP file contains 1 to 4 files. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The file size is in the range of 58 KB to 2 MB. These files are attributed to hnah.
