Opening an SKC File
The SKC file type is primarily associated with BIOVIA Draw.
What is an SKC file?
How do you open SKC files?
You need a suitable software like BIOVIA Draw to open an SKC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SKC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SKC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SKC file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the SKC files comes to the following conclusion:
SKC is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 65% of all SKC files are associated with ISIS sketch. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 930 bytes to 15 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Created and Arialx. Such files sometimes refer to eflornithine and unnamed.
- 9% of all SKC files are based on the zip format, that is, an SKC file includes multiple compressed files. Most often they are 4 to 6 compressed files. File names inside are document.xml, documentProperties.xml and references.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. A typical file size is 59 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. document.xml. An example of a file name is IFC 2x3.skc.
All other SKC files (26%) have no uniform format, often e.g. SKAN and cks. Sometimes used for fmhi, hdtv, skin or front. If you want to find out which format your SKC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .skc file to analyze".

How to solve problems with SKC files
- Associate the SKC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SKC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available BIOVIA Draw update.
- To make sure that your SKC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SKC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
